Ram 1500 vs Ram 2500

2019 brought a lot of upgrades for Ram trucks, which now offer things like a 12-inch touchscreen display and an exceptionally roomy center console. If you’re excited about these features, you may be wondering which model is better: The Ram 1500 or the Ram 2500?

A lot of the answer will depend on what you’re looking to do with your truck in Wilsonville, Woodburn, and Portland. Keep reading this Ram 1500 vs. Ram 2500 comparison from Wilsonville CDJR to learn about the key differences between each model!

The Power is Yours: Engine Options

Across the Ram truck lineup, you have five engines to choose from. Three are available in the Ram 1500, and two are available in the Ram 2500.

The 1500 starts with a 3.6L Pentastar® V6. This provides 305 horsepower and 269 lb-ft of torque, which is enough power to tow 7,730 pounds when properly equipped.

An available 5.7L HEMI® V8 offers more power, generating 395 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque. This engine can tow 11,610 pounds when properly equipped. The Ram 1500 also offers this engine with an eTorque mild hybrid system, which adds up to 130 additional lb-ft of torque. That extra force increases towing capacity to 12,750 pounds in the Ram 1500.

Even though the Ram 2500 has fewer options, each one packs a greater punch. Its 6.4L HEMI® V8, for example, generates 410 horsepower and 429 lb-ft of torque. With this engine, the 2500 can tow up to 17,130 pounds.

Need more pulling power? Opt for the 6.7L Cummins® Turbo Diesel I6 for an impressive 850 lb-ft of torque. That force, plus 370 horsepower, gives the 2019 Ram 2500 a maximum towing capacity of 19,879 pounds when properly equipped.

Fitting Your Needs: Configuration Options

If you’re looking for box size, each model has two options. The Ram 1500 is available with either a five-foot, seven-inch box or a slightly larger six-foot, four-inch box. The Ram 2500 starts with that six-foot, four-inch box and can be upsized to an eight-foot box.

Where the Ram 2500 offers more bed space, the Ram 1500 offers more passenger space. The 2500 has three cab options, starting with a regular cab that only seats two or three depending on interior configuration. You also have the option to upgrade to the six-seater Crew Cab or Mega Cab.

The 2019 Ram 1500 has two cab options: Quad Cab and Crew Cab, each of which seats up to six. However, the Crew Cab in the Ram 1500 has more passenger space than the Mega Cab in the Ram 2500.

The Cherry on Top: Available Features

Ram 1500 Bed Features Ram 1500 Interior
The bed of each Ram truck offers a RamBox® Cargo Management System, which turns the area over the wheel well into more convenient storage space—complete with a 115-volt power outlet.

The Ram 1500 also offers an innovative multifunction tailgate, which you won’t find in the Ram 2500. You can fold this tailgate down like any other tailgate. Or, you can swing its 60/40-split doors open to the side for closer bed access.

Both trucks are also available with a power-operated single-pane sunroof. If you opt for the Ram 1500 Crew Cab, though, you can upgrade that to a dual-pane sunroof.

Similarly, each truck offers a Harman Kardon® Premium Audio System. Yet again, it’s slightly better in the Ram 1500, with 19 speakers and 900 watts. Compare that to the Ram 2500 premium audio system, which comes with 17 speakers and 750 watts.

Ram 1500 vs Ram 2500: Which is Right for You?

In order to choose between these two capable trucks, you’ll need to think about your needs. If you need expansive cargo space and towing power, opt for the heavy-duty Ram 2500. More interested in keeping your passengers comfortable? Go with the Ram 1500, which offers more passenger space and amenities.
