Jeep Cherokee vs Ford Escape
Trying to decide between two popular SUVs on the market? Let Wilsonville CDJR help you decide which one to take home in Wilsonville, Woodburn, and Portland. Our 2019 Jeep Cherokee vs. Ford Escape comparison will help you see which vehicle has better performance specs, more interior space, and better safety ratings.
Performance and Towing Capacities
Whether you’re shopping for a Jeep Cherokee or a Ford Escape, you have three engines to choose from. The most impressive option in each vehicle is a 2.0L turbo. However, when you take a closer look, the version in the Cherokee outperforms its competition no matter how you look at it.
For instance, the 2.0L turbocharged engine in the Cherokee offers 270 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. That’s compared to only 245 horsepower and 275 lb-ft of torque in the Escape option. In part because of this extra power, the Cherokee can tow up to 4,500 pounds when properly equipped—that’s 1,000 more pounds than the Escape can tow.
While the 2.0L engine is paired with a 6-speed SelectShift® Automatic transmission in the Escape, the Cherokee uses a 9-speed automatic transmission. This offers more precise control without sacrificing a smooth shifting from gear to gear.
Last but certainly not least, the Cherokee allows you to go farther between fuel stops. When equipped with the 2.0L engine and front-wheel drive, the Cherokee gets an EPA-estimated 23 city/31 highway MPG. The same configuration in the Escape, on the other hand, only gets an EPA-estimated 21 city/28 highway MPG.
Versatile and Stylish Design
Features like the signature 7-slot grille in the 2019 Cherokee show off the unique Jeep styling you’ve come to know and love. Few other car manufacturers have been able to create such an iconic style—for instance, the front grille in the Ford Escape makes it look like just another vehicle on the road.
Of course, both vehicles are about more than great looks. As two of the best SUVs, they also offer plenty of interior space for five passengers and their gear. In fact, the 2019 Jeep Cherokee offers 128 cubic feet of passenger volume, so everyone can stretch out and get comfortable.
The interior of the Escape feels cramped by comparison. With only 98.7 cubic feet of passenger space, it offers significantly less room for you and your friends or family.
Active Safety Features
Safety is a top priority, whether you’re traveling through city streets or taking it off the road. The 2019 Jeep Cherokee and Ford Escape both have optional active safety technologies that can warn you if they sense a potential collision in front of the vehicle.
The Ford Escape can also get the brake ready for you, offering a more responsive stop time when you put your foot on the pedal. However, the Cherokee takes it one step further: If you don’t respond to its warnings in time, it can activate the brakes for you to help prevent a collision or mitigate the damage if one does occur.
This additional autobrake technology earned the Cherokee a Superior rating for front crash prevention from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Meanwhile, the Escape only got a Basic rating.
